C5 Winter Mechanical Safety Tips
   The first time I opened the owner’s manual for my 2000 Corvette I was surprised to see the large number of safety tips in this little book. Nearly all of the cautions and recommendations were common sense items that apply to any vehicle, not just the C5. Since people have become so litigious, perhaps GM included these in the owner’s manual just to satisfy some legal “check in the box” requirement. Still, they did serve as a handy reminder.


Here are a few from the manual as well as a few of my own:

Never park a hot car on dried leaves or grass. The exhaust system can easily cause these materials to ignite.


When warming up any vehicle covered in snow, be aware that exhaust gasses, including carbon monoxide, can accumulate around the snowdrifts and enter the cabin. If your car is sitting in a snow “crater”, clear ample space around the exhaust pipes while it’s warming up.


Unless you’re practicing your skid pad maneuvers, never turn off the C5’s Active Handling system. And certainly don’t put it in the Competition mode unless you absolutely want to do some drifting!


The C5 model in particular scoops up all kinds’ debris. Open the hood and check for leaves and pine needles. They can accumulate in the most unlikely places.By the same token, don’t plow through deep water or snow. The C5 air intake is very low to the ground and can scoop up water and snow very easily.


The C5 is notorious for intermittent grounds. The two ground points that are the most problematic are the ones under the hood behind each headlight. They can become badly corroded and intermittent. If you find that your horn or fog lights don’t work, a loose or corroded ground might be the cause.


According to the Corvette Forum, the C5’s parking brake is not to be trusted if you have a manual transmission. Park the car in R just to be on the safe side. 


When storing your Corvette for a prolonged period of time, be sure to add a bottle of Sta-Bil to your fuel tank.


If you’re not going to drive your C5 or C6 for any length of time, I recommend that you keep the battery topped off by using a trickle charger such as the Deltran Battery Tender Plus.


The more electronics your car has, the more it will drain the battery over time.
